A growing understanding of the health benefits brought by functional foods means that the global functional food market is now predicted to reach $130 billion by 2015. Key target markets include digestive health, beauty products, healthy ageing and weight management. The fruit and juice market is particularly strong, with nutraceutical drinks, beverages that bring targeted health benefits, increasing in popularity.
In the personal care market, products containing botanicals are predicted to show growth of over 200% for the period 2007-2017. This includes products for skin care, anti-ageing, babies and children.
Chemicals produced by plants can be beneficial in treatments for cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and many other illnesses. The sector has a value of €45 billion with a projected growth of up to 8% per annum.
