Within the bioeconomy, the bioenergy and biofuels markets have seen particularly growth over the last two decades. With the range of biological, biochemical and thermochemical processes available, a range of feedstocks can now be used for bioenergy and biofuel production.
‘Wet’ waste can be treated with e.g. anaerobic digestion and fermentation. Thermochemical processes, such as gasification and pyrolysis, are more suitable processes for ‘dry’ feedstocks. In particular, InCrops has strong links to the University of East Anglia’s Biomass Gasification Combined Cooling, Heat and Power Plant, a highly efficient way of providing renewable energy. Through this relationship we have developed expertise in the practical and strategic delivery of similar projects.
The demand for sustainability assessment is also increasing, in particular with regards to reduction of GHG emissions. Opportunities for low carbon feedstocks are particularly relevant in light of the requirements for reporting on the sustainability of bioenergy and biofuels. Finally, biomass derivatives can be used in the production of a number of high-value products, for example the biochar produced as a co-product of gasification has emerging applications in soil improvement, environmental remediation, water filtration and cosmetics.
