This workshop is aimed at architects and designers interested in exploring the possibilities and limitations of integrating algae into the built environment.
InCrops are launching a new series of events entitled "Living Designs ", aimed at built environment and property professionals, including developers, architects, interior designers, civil engineers, and firms providing building maintenance and servicing.
These events will address the opportunities and challenges of using biological systems and biobased materials in the built environment. We aim to bridge the gap between science and design, inspire creative use of biological systems, and share our thoughts and ideas on how biological systems can improve the quality and the performance of buildings.
Why integrate biological systems into the built environment?
To increase sustainability:
• by lowering the amount of embodied carbon and improving the carbon footprint;
• by dealing with waste, as part of a cradle-to-cradle design approach;
• by using a building's interior and exterior space to grow biomass, edible or ornamental plants for on-site catering supply or providing an additional revenue stream;
• by presenting opportunities for on-site energy generation;
To improve health and wellbeing:
• by improving air quality, through reduction of pollutants, humidification, and achieving better oxygen/carbon dioxide balance;
• by bioremediation and cleaning of water;
• by creating comfort for occupants;
To create visionary building designs that live in harmony with the environment:
• by using a biomimicry approach when designing a building and building envelope;
• by taking advantage of innovation and creativity.
Our first event will focus on algae, a group of organisms whose application in the built environment is as yet very much in its infancy, but where opportunities are emerging. From applications in solar shading to the potential to absorb carbon dioxide, algae have attracted the attention of architects. The event is aimed at those who would like to gain a better understanding of the opportunities and limitations associated with algae.
The event will:
Introduce the biology and diversity of algae, and potential future uses
Present case studies where microalgae are being incorporated into the built environment as functional elements: external /internal shading, radiant panels in atria and perimeter glazing.
Discuss some of the technical challenges associated with growing microalgae and the range of cultivation systems available.
Investigate the current barriers to wider uptake of their use in the built environment.
